Rituals of Indian Wedding

 

In a culture, the story of marriage customs is forgotten but the customs remain common, in others, the source is as important as the tradition. Lots of marriage traditions observed around the society and each has its different qualities.

 

Misri

In Indian marriages beginning of the functions starts with Misri, which celebrated three days before the wedding. In this tradition, the marrying pair exchanges praises blossom garlands and gold rings. The groom’s parents present the bride with a basket of gifts and misri (rock sugar), an indication of sweetness in the future life.

 

Sangeet Ceremony

The Sangeet celebrated separately or merged with the Mehendi ceremony. The sangeet ceremony celebrated with the families of the bride and groom or just the ladies getting together for song and dance.


 
Mehendi

Mehendi function held one day before the real wedding. Only ladies present for this function and drawn on their hands and feet with Mehendi. The designs imply a strong bond between the couple. Frequently, the Mehendi function is connected with Sagri, were the bride's family members give gifts to the groom


Haldi Ceremony

On the morning of the wedding or night before the wedding, the Haldi function celebrate. In this custom, both sides of the family spread a mixture of oil, water, and turmeric over the skin and clothes of the bride and groom. The mixture is believed to play a role in blessing the couple and in moisturizing and soothing their skin before the wedding.
 

Mandap

In old Indian weddings, the ceremony takes place under a Mandap, which is a four-pillared covering. Always mandap decorated with the bright colors.
 


Laja Homa

When the marriage ritual, the brother of the bride spills rice into her hands, some of which slips into the groom’s hands cupped below hers, and then into the holy fire.
 


Mangalsultra

In the Hindu culture, They don't replace wedding rings, the groom attaches a mangalsultra around the bride’s neck. The Mangalsultra is a jewelry with two gold pendants. The groom ties the necklace with three knots to signify a strong bonding for 100 years.

 
Attire

Colors are very important in attire.  The bride ware a 16-piece attire called Solah Shringar which involves makeup, jewelry, and clothes. All item enhances the natural beauty of the bride. One important piece of the Solah Shringar is the Mangtikka, which uses on her forehead and into the part of her hair. The original garment the bride wears will vary depending on what region she is from. The type of jewelry may also vary. The groom’s attire is not as elaborate… at a traditional Hindu wedding, the groom will wear a Sherwani and Mojari, which is a type of shoe that is seen often in Mughal art. As for the guests, most women at the wedding will be wearing a Sari or a Lengha. The guests, the bride, and groom, usually wear in vibrant color. Most attendees will wear Bindis and Bangles as part of their custom wedding attire as well. Some women also wear payals.
